During the 20th century, the almond trees of Villa Belvedere were slowly replaced by a variety of citrus trees such as lemon, orange, grapefruit and mandarin trees whose flowers subtly embalm the air of the gardens and whose fruit then embellish the scenery twice a year.

"...The gaze embraces the long mountainous back of Mount Etna, to the left the beach to Catania, even up to Syracuse. The huge smoking volcano embraces the exterminated picture, but without crudity, because the vapors of the atmosphere make it appear farther away and more graceful, if from this show the eye turns to the corridors built behind the spectators, here on the left all the walls of the rock, and between these and the sea the road that winds up to Messina, and groups and clusters of rocks in the same sea, the coast of Calabria in the last background, which only carefully spying is discerned among the gently rising clouds ... Observing how this region, in all the interesting details, was gradually sinking into darkness , it was a spectacle of unspeakable beauty...”
